BC Partizan was formed as the basketball section inside the Sport’s Union of the Yugoslavian Army and the current name was first used in 1946 when the team participated in the first Yugoslavian national championship. In 1953 Partizan officially seceded from the Yugoslavian Army and continued operating inside the Yugoslavian Sport’s Union Partizan. The raise of the club toward one of the most reknowed European clubs has started in 1970s when some ex-players took over the club alongside with a well known basketball expert Ranko Žeravica. Partizan started collecting international fame with the Korač Cup trophies while in 1992 Partizan won the club's first – and to date only – Euroleague title. At home, Partizan remained a steady power amid sharp competitor, winning cups and titles at a steady clip, while another Euroleague Final Four appearance followed in 1998. In recent years, Partizan is a dominant force in the NLB League since 2007 and the most promising European club, always a top contender for at least a quarter-final place in Euroleague despite a very low budget compared to other European clubs.
